I'm a big U2 fan, and I'm sure I could have chosen any song to be on this brief list, but I chose these songs because I love them whether I hear them played live or on their original album. So for my birthday today, I will list my favorites along with a video of a spectacular performance of said song.
Okay, here goes:
1. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
Album: Achtung Baby
Alright, so many people, when choosing their favorite song from Achtung Baby, usually go with the obvious ("One", "Mysterious Ways"). However, I have always been drawn to this gem of a song. However, I have one rule about this song. I don't (usually) listen to the original version of the song, as it is too laid-back and understated. Rather, I listen to a b-side version of this song with more acoustic guitars that give it a better feel. The above video is of that "Temple Bar" version.
2. New Year's Day
Album: War
What can I say about this song? Wow. I listen to "New Year's Day" every time it is played, and it just seems to get better and better every single time. It is a mainstay on U2's numerous tours over the last 25 years, and I just love it, no matter what year or what venue.
3. Where the Streets Have No Name
Album: The Joshua Tree
A truly epic song, especially in concert. From the red backdrop to the bright lights that shine just when the song begins to take flight, seeing this song performed never gets old.
4. Bullet the Blue Sky
Album: The Joshua Tree
A scathing attack on Ronald Reagan's foreign policy, this song is definitely U2's loudest song, and it is a killer song when played live. During the Zoo TV tour, the song "All I Want Is You" segued into this song, and thusly surprising the audience, as the end of the former song is much quieter than the explosiveness of the latter. The video above is an apt example of just how fiery this song could get.
By the way, if you want to skip the opening monologue, go to 1:50 on the video.
I hoped you enjoyed the videos!
